LO4: Evaluation

Our trailer was created to promote our short film 'The Sixteenth' the narrative follows a struggling detective who is working on a case about a serial killer in the fictional town of Stompton, he is analysing the murders but he also is finding it very difficult to get anywhere on the case, he is an alcoholic as he goes to alcohol whenever he's struggling. Using notes left behind at the murder scenes, which contain information that only the detective could know. we used gradual speed in our trailer to. build up tension, to do this we edited clips shorter and shorter.

We have included music in our trailer  to build tension which will be used to influence the audience’s emotions and may make them want to watch the , we will use suspenseful music to really get the right effect on the audience. We will also use sound effects to create verisimilitude within the trailer and make it seem realistic. To edit this we used shot cuts, this is a popular convention of this type of trailer, by doing this we matched the visuals with the audio as when the music got faster so did the clips. We did this to build up tension and pace, this is a strength as it engages to audience more and may make them what to see the film in order to see what happens.

Another strength of our trailer was the ending, I feel this ending with the static screen and “officer down” makes the trailer end of a cliff hanger, this is important in thriller trailers as it makes the audience want more which makes them want to watch the film.

We could improve this trailer by adding more scenes to create a storyline, we did our trailer in a non-linear format as we didn’t want the audience to understand what happens in the film although this can be confusing. By adding more of the narrative, especially in the beginning, it may help the audience connect more with the narrative and therefor want to watch the film.

We could have also chosen a different backing track for our trailer as it is quite over powering, this can mean the audience is distracted instead of paying attention and therefor not understanding the trailer as we intended.

Overall I feel this trailer fits the purpose of promoting for the sixteenth as it engages the audience, although we could improve it in a few areas inorder to make them understand it more.

LO4: Feedback

We conducted A survey to see what we could improve on our trailer, we gave the group the 4th draft of the trailer:

From this feedback, we can tell that the blank space needs filling in with footage as well as adding in titles such as the title of the film and production company. Also adding in text when the cast shows up would help it follow the conventions of a trailer. We have made these changes as part of our final draft

LO4: Evidence of editing and audio levels

For the last section of the trailer with the TV static and title sequence we had to drag these onto the track, then by using the razor tool we cut these to the appropriate size, these needed to be changed as by default they are very long. We decided to use sharp cuts in our trailer to build tension so we did not use fading effects of our footage, instead we used the razor tool to cut it where was appropriate and fitted it with the music. We decided to fit our music to the visuals so that as the music was building up so was the visuals which built more tension. I also had to cut the music and apply fade-in-out to the middle part, this was because the music was too long and so lost tension, i applied a fade-in-out with a shot duration so that these two  music clips blended together.

The audio for our short film that we recorded whilst filming wasn't very clear in certain scenes due to background noise and the windy weather on the day of filming. With the first crime scene there was an issue where some machinery could be heard, because of this we had to re record the audio in a studio using a hand held microphone which we then synced to the actors lip movement. To do this we had them listen to the way they said the line and asked them to repeat it as close as possible so that it could be synced with the video appropriately. We then inserted and blended the audio with background noise inorder to make it seamless. By doing this now allows us to have crisp and clear audio which can be heard over background noise and can be understood making for a better film altogether. We used some of this audio for our trailer such as the 'officer down' audio used for effect at the end. We also had to change the audio levels in premiere for some of the clips such as the music and audio so that it was balanced, i did this through editing the levels in the audio editing section of premier moving the bar up or down depending on the audio.
